We’re all familiar with the claims; #1 Driver in Golf (TaylorMade), the #1 Ball in Golf (Titleist)…with enough creativity, everyone is #1 at something. Equipment companies also like to trade on player rankings as well. Did you know that the current top 2 players in the world play TaylorMade, or that 5 of the current top 14 (use of non-standard numbers is a common ploy to boost percentages) golfers in the world are Callaway staffers?
Several weeks ago we posted a tweet with a quick tally of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) broken down by primary equipment sponsor (the company that can claim a given player is on their staff – usually it’s the name on the hat). The popularity of the tweet caught us by surprise, so we decided to display the rankings on the site.
With 3 of the 4 Majors in the books, here is a chart showing how the golf equipment companies rank based on the number of Top 25 golfers in the OWGR.
Notes:
- Charl Schwartzel moved from Nike to PXG immediately before The Open Championship. That change (PXG +1/ Nike -1) is reflected in the chart.
- Titleist balls are used by 10 of the top 25. Callaway and TaylorMade are next at 4 apiece.
- Trending indicator is based on previous rank, not player count.
