Callaway adds Raw Option to MD4 Wedge Lineup

Here’s a little something to hold you over while you’re waiting for the next XR or the next Apex, or the next whatever it is you’re waiting for from Callaway Golf.

Queue up some ODB because the company has just announced a new Raw finish option for its MD4 wedge lineup, which technically is more of a lack of finish option. I digress.

We’re not going to going to dig into the features too deeply, but if you need a refresher, we’ve got you covered. What you need to know is that the new raw finish brings with it all the requisite MD4 goodness. You’ve got loft-specific grooves (with micro-grooves), progressive CG locations, and the extra Nip-It groove near the leading edge.

What is new, different, and potentially exciting, is the addition of a new X Grind to the lineup. Available in 54, 56, 58, and 60-degree lofts, the X Grind is described as “a narrow, high-bounce (12°), crescent sole design, with the low point near the front.” It’s well-suited for moderate to steep attack angles and soft turf.

MD4 Raw Loft Offerings

With the addition of the X-Grind, the raw wedge will be available in 15 different loft-bounce combinations. While that’s not nearly as many as Callaway offers in Satin or Black, it should be more than enough to meet the needs of typical golfers – most of whom don’t bother to get fitted for wedges anyway.

You’re throwing shots away, people.

The MD4 is available in the following Loft/Grind combinations:

  • S-Grind: 50°, 52°, 54°, 56°, 58°, 60°
  • C-Grind: 54°, 56°, 58°, 60°, 62°
  • X-Grind: 54°, 56°, 58°, 60°

The raw finish should appeal to golfers who like a bit of the tour vibe to their golf bags. It can be expected wear and rust more quickly than Satin, QPQ, DBM, or basically any other finish on the market, but it brings with it the glare-free look that tour players love.

And while perhaps it’s not perhaps it’s not validation in the conventional sense, 5 times Sergio Garcia’s ball shimmy shimmy ya’d and spun into the pond in front of the 15th green at Augusta. Between his MD4 wedge and his Chrome Soft X ball, he made an argument that Callaway’s gear can produce prodigious amounts of spin. Too much for Sergio in that situation, but no doubt it raised some eyebrows for the spin-challenged among us.

The release comes at the start of a golf season in which Callaway hopes to overtake Cleveland for the #2 spot (retail dollars) in the wedge category. The MD4 has been well-received and adding a few more options to the mix certainly won’t hurt the momentum.
