Do a Meet and Greet
Did you know that you can bring your child to the dentist's office to get acquainted before the day of their actual checkup? "If kids -- or parents -- are nervous I always recommend that they visit the office prior to their appointment so they can meet the staff, see where they'll sit and find out what to expect during the exam," says Lezli Levene Harvell, D.M.D., a board-certified pediatric dentist in Newark, New Jersey, and mother of five who has treated her fair share of reluctant patients. "Coming to the dentist can be a bit of an overload. By visiting first kids can get acclimated and come back another day knowing what to expect. It's a great tool that is completely underutilized." Schedule Appointments with The Same Hygienist
This study revealed that children have strong perceptions and preferences regarding dental visits and dentists. The majority (63%) of the children in this study reported that they liked their visit to the dentist which is consistent with the results of other studies that have examined children’s attitudes toward dental care. However, dental practitioners should be concerned by the fact that 11% of children in this study reported that they disliked their visit and another 12% reported that they were afraid of the dentist.
The purpose of identifying children’s attitudes towards their dentists is to effect positive changes or adjustments that would make children more comfortable in the dentist’s office and improve the quality of dental visits. Children in this study indicated that they would prefer to be treated by a dentist of the same gender. Assigning children to dentists of the same gender may improve the general comfort level of children in the dentist’s office. Source:  NCBI

Pursuit of Happiness or Pursuit of Me: Why not both!

The waves of emotions still ebb and flow as people continue to reach out with words of encouragement and empathetic comments.

It’s been a several weeks since publishing my article, “Seeking a Life Free of Addiction Started with a Choice“, and the messages keep coming. None is more overwhelming than the private messages recounting of ‘blackout’ nights, broken families, and worse, the death of loved ones through abuse of alcohol and drugs.

My want to stop drinking alcohol all started as a choice – as simple as it was to make, it was anything but easy. The support networks I sought out didn’t jive with who I was nor with who I was trying to be, which left me wondering, “What do I do?” And based on those that have reached out, there’s a lot of people in the same place I was years ago when I made my choice to stop drinking.

As a result, I’ve been in weekly discussions with Saint Jude Retreats, an organization dedicated to helping people gain control over their own lives, and effect lasting changes in their attitudes, motivations, choices and behaviors. They’ve been inspired to look further into how they can best serve people who may be struggling with their own substance use issues.

That along with high failure rates and counter-intuitive methods of traditional treatments, many may simply not even attempt to find the best methods for help. And to be fair, it may be difficult for people to truly know the best way to go about trying to help a family member or friend who’s struggling because they may not have any experience with feeling hopeless and trapped.

When it comes to addiction, there’s 2 types of people

In my experience in working with Saint Jude’s, based on the feedback I’ve received, there are two types of people: those that BELIEVE THEY CAN overcome addiction and those who BELIEVE THEY CAN’T.

Based on the overwhelming feedback, comments and outreach from my communities and the media, I feel it necessary to get some deeper insights from you, my tribe. To best help, I need to better understand what people think about addiction, and what better way to do that than with a survey.

The survey consists of 10 questions, mostly multiple choice and takes only a couple of minutes to complete.

Armed with your responses I will be working with Saint Jude Retreats to create more resources including articles and videos, to better help those who face struggles similar to that which I experienced for much of my life. Thank you for your help.

In Closing

I’m like everyone else and experience low moments in life and at those times I find myself questioning my choices. The Dai of years ago would have reached for a bottle to numb the emotions of uncertainty, since the Dai of today (besides speaking in 3rd person) remembers the important choices and decisions made in his life.

The journey I’ve found myself on has had it’s up days and down days. When I find myself having one of those days, I reach out to those that matter most to me in my life – my wife, my children, my tribe – their unconditional love, support and friendship reminds me of my decision to choose ‘me’ first.

Having a positive outlet to bring you back to a place of gratefulness and appreciation for life, and all the awesomeness it holds for us, is key.

The “Than” Versus “Then” Debacle

Sometimes you have to get back to basics. All writers are guilty of making mistakes at some point, and they kick themselves for months after an astute reader notices that they added one too many o’s to their “to.” Once that’s in print, you can’t take it back.

So today, I’d like to draw attention to one common mistake so that you will hopefully never have to take it back.

The Than Vs. Then Debacle: When to Use Then Vs Than

Then Vs. Than: A Sneaky, Common Error

See if you can spot the mistake:

“Mark, you know better then to startle me after my self-defense class,” Amy said as she pulled the bag of peas out of the freezer.

I’ve seen this fairly common error around the blogosphere much more often than I’d like:

The then-vs.-than debacle.

It’s an easy mistake to miss, too, especially when you’re on a roll and the words are shooting out of your brain, down your arm, through your fingers, and onto the keypad.

You can’t stop when it happens; you might lose the momentum. But the fact remains that your spell-check won’t catch it.

So when should you use then vs. than?

Let’s break this down into the most basic rules we can.

When Do You Use “Than?”

Use “than” in comparisons. For example, it’s pretty easy to identify this as a comparison:

Casey was more interesting than his brother Luke, and not just because he was a professional ultramarathoner.

However, things get tricky when you’re not directly comparing things. For example, it becomes a little more challenging in situations like this:

Rachel was a little more awkward than he remembered, although Jason mentally acknowledged that his whiskey sour on Friday had been a little heavier on the whiskey than usual.

In this example, even though we’re not comparing concrete things (like Casey and Luke in the first example), a comparison still occurs. Jason compares Rachel’s current level of awkwardness to the level he remembered from their last meeting. He also compares the alcohol content of Friday’s whiskey sour to the alcohol content that is usually present in his oh-so-manly drink.

So When Does “Then” Come Into Play?

You only ever use “then” when timing is involved. See below:

Laura covered her face, then thrust her arm out of the covers, slapping the alarm clock on the floor in the early morning darkness.

Clearly, a sequence of events is happening here. Laura slaps her alarm clock after covering her face, so “then” is the appropriate word to use.

If You Remember This Rule, Then You’ll Save Yourself Grief

Learn the difference between than and then. Then you won’t have sneaky errors hiding under your spell-check’s radar and worming their way into your otherwise perfectly polished manuscript.

A More Forgiving M1 Driver? Here's How

Golfers who bought TaylorMade's M1 driver before M2 may have experienced a bit of buyers remorse.

Don't misunderstand. M1 is a terrific driver. It's highly configurable. It offers a robust platform for fitters, and plenty of movable parts for DIYers and those of us who like to tinker. The only real knock on the M1 driver is that it's not as forgiving as some of its competitors, and its not nearly as forgiving as the TaylorMade M2, which was released several months after the M1.

If you're one of those guys who loves his M1, but wishes it was more forgiving, we've got good news? Your M1 absolutely can be more forgiving. Better news still, it won't cost you a dime. The driver ships with everything you'll need to boost MOI and increase forgiveness.

Here's what you need to do.

Step 1

First, remove both the front and and back weights from their respective tracks. For maximum forgiveness, both weights have to come out.

To remove the Rear Track weight:

  • Remove the red weight cap, and slide the weight to the LOW position
  • Hold the head directly in front of you such that LOW and HIGH appear upside down and the hosel is pointing directly away from you
  • Slowly flip the head such that the hosel is moving towards you and the sole towards the ground
  • The weight should fall out on its own (give it a jiggle if necessary)

The process is the same for the front weights. Note the exit position is closest to DRAW and text should be right side up prior to flipping.

Note that the both the weights and weight covers are labeled. FT for Front Track and BT for Back Track. The front weight (15 grams) is 5 grams heavier than the rear weight (which basic math tells us must be 10 grams).

We want that heavier weight all the way back.

Step 2

Starting with 15 gram weight from the front track, place both weights into the back channel. Slide them all the way to the rear of the club, and secure by screwing the black and red caps back on.

While we used the more compact and workable M1 430 for our example, for the M1 460 this should bring MOI closer to that of M2.

Bonus Tip - a Lower & More Forward CG M1

Some golfers may elect to trade MOI for the greater efficiency that comes from a lower and more forward Center of Gravity. This can be an especially effective setup for higher swing speed golfers with negative angles of attack (guys who hit down on the driver). Generally speaking, these are the type of players who may benefit from the M1 430.

To configure your M1 for low forward CG simply place both weights into the front track. Order is less important here as you can position the weight to achieve the desired draw or fade bias. Note that if the weights are centered, bias will ever-so-slightly favor the side with the 15 gram weight.

Keep in mind, these tips apply to both the M1 460 and the M1 430 (on a relative basis) Give the alternative configurations shown above a try and let us know how it goes.

As we neared the sandy hillock, a flash of water flittered across the skyline. A little breeze riffled across the grass and a seagull cried out as it wheeled away towards the distant town. The sea slowly spread out in shades of turquoise, jade green, deep purple and bright blue. My horse’s ears pricked as she snorted the sea-salt scented air and she did a little jig of anticipation.

“Tana thinks she’s going for a canter along the beach, but we can’t ride there between May and October,” explained Gemma, my riding instructor and owner of Son Bou Rutas a Cavall. We walked nearer to the sea and stopped to admire the stunning view. To our left stretched a long sandy beach and the popular resort of Son Bou. To our right, rocky cliffs edged the ocean and a clearly marked path wound its way along the northern coast of Menorca.

We were on the Cami de Cavalls, a historic route that circles the coast of Menorca (Minorca), an island off the coast of mainland Spain. Restored and fully opened in 2011, this ancient path may have been used by the Knights of James II in the 14th c. During the 1730s Governor Richard Kane had it cleared for use by the occupying British troops and it was clearly marked on the first map of Menorca, drawn up by French cartographer in 1780.

Totalling 185 km, the Cami de Cavalls is divided up into 20 stages, and ” … crosses gullies, rocky zones, valleys, wetland and farming areas; it connects ancient watchtowers, lighthouses and trenches and it leads to a great deal of coves and spots of the island. (Cami de Cavalls 360) Menorca is a MAB (Man and Biosphere) UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, which recognises its significance balancing socio-economic development and the preservation of the environment. Menorca has a unique combination of dune systems, gorges, marshlands and other geological attractions, with pre-historic archaeological remains and a traditional agricultural system. The Cami de Cavalls passes by all these areas, ensuring a fascinatingly diverse route, including Mahon, the capital and Ciutadella, the old capital. Popular with walkers, cyclists, mountain bikers and runners, without doubt the most enjoyable way to travel this route is on horseback.

On arrival at the Rutas a Cavall Riding School, I met Gemma who has over 30 horses as well as a few donekeys and chickens. “I love horses and have rescued many since the recession hit our country. You’ll be riding Tana, a Menorcan Horse; she has a lovely temperament and is very gentle. She was winner of ‘Most Beautiful Mare’ in the fiestas a few years ago.” I was absolutely delighted to be riding a Menorcan Horse. This breed is renowned for its grace and agility during the famous Menorca Fiestas, where they rear up on their hind legs in the midst of enthusiastic revellers. I’ve been on many family holidays to Menorca but never had the chance to ride one of these majestic horses before.

Mounting Tana seemed a bit daunting (I hadn’t been riding for many years and wasn’t very fit!) but Gemma provided a stool to step up onto. She takes people of all levels and ages, going from gentle walk to hearty gallop, depending on ability. Having checked stirrups and tightened Tana’s girth, Gemma mounted her horse, Estelle, a magnificent black stallion with lots of fiesta experience. The Cami de Cavalls goes past the stables and we were soon ambling along a narrow, tree-shaded path, with spring flowers on either side and early butterflies flittering about.

The path opened out into a wide valley. Gemma told me, “This gorge has one of only two working water wheels left on the island. There are turtles breeding again in the river and we occasionally see eagles here. A nature reserve ensures all the wildlife is protected.” It was really peaceful riding along this track, occasionally passed by walkers and once, a group of cyclists who were half way round the island on a cycling club holiday.

Lying under a tree, a huge bull gazed placidly over his harem as they grazed on lush spring grass. A family of holiday-makers hurried by on their way to the beach. Two women with sturdy walking sticks said a cheery good morning and a group of Spanish runners jogged by, waving water bottles as they passed. Every so often Gemma dismounted to open a gate. She has an ingenious way to keep it open whilst other riders go through; she places a stone in the angle between the gate post and gate. I eventually got the knack of dislodging it as I rode through, enabling it to swing shut. Menorcan gates as things of beauty; carved by master-carpenters, they’re made from olive wood and have a graceful curve.

Eventually we came out to Son Bou beach, the longest on Menorca. In the distance wind-surfers were zipping voer the waves and a tiny yacht sailed off towards Majorca. We walked up the sandhills to the top, from where we got a splendid view of the north coastline. The sea glittered enticingly beneath us and the sun enveloped us in a warm embrace. Tana stood very patiently whilst Gemma took lots of photos of us to capture the moment, whilst passing walkers admired our beautiful horses.

Eventually we had to return, though I would have been happy to ride on for much longer. As we went past a herd of horses, a young mare came galloping down the hill. Gemma shooed her away – apparently she was especially interested in our very fine stallion, Estelle. On the horizon a young foal raised its head and gazed across the meadow at us, whilst its mother and other horses grazed nearby.

Clouds were starting to roll in … Spring in Menorca is a lovely time to visit but the weather is quite changeable and rain looked imminent. “Shall we trot?” asked Gemma. “OK, I’ll give it a go.” With a gentle nudge, Tana set off at a cbrisk trot and I managed to keep my balance. Fortunately it wasn’t far to go and as pretty wild flowers flew by, I got into a bit of a rhythm as we came up the lane back to the riding school. Dismounting rather shakily I gave Tana a piece of carrot and a big hug; she really had made a dream come true …

How to Rig The Game of Life So You Can Win Everyday

It wasn’t like I jumped off a cliff…

…into that bowl of ice cream.

I drifted my way towards my heavier self.

A bigger belt notch here. A huffing and puffing trip up the stairs there. Wearing bigger and baggier clothes to feel more comfortable with myself. It was hard not to notice those things every day.

I would read all the latest magazines, blogs, and even got pulled into infomercials about the newest workouts and quick fixes. Tony and P90X got me fired up! I would invest the money and thought that would hold me accountable. Within weeks those dvds, workouts, and plans would be under the couch and I would be watching Netflix again.

Every time I found the motivation to take a giant step, execution and fear slapped me right back down the stairs of average.

The game seemed like it was impossible to come out on top!

3 Steps to Rigging the Game of Life (Go for the WIN!)

I came across an idea the other day that really resonated with me and I would have loved to have at the beginning of my health transformation: Rig the game so you can win.

Most of the time we have this grandiose vision of what we want our healthy self to look like. 50lbs lighter, six-pack abs, looking like one of the fitspo people you follow on Instagram. Those are Mt. Everest visions and goals. They are so daunting. How many times have you bought all the gear and prepped to climb the tallest peak in the world, but couldn’t make it out of your front door?

Step 1. Slash Your Goal in Half (Or LOWER!)

“My eyes were bigger than my stomach…” We have all said that about a meal or seven in our lifetimes. The same can be said about our Mt. Everest goals. We create goals so big because that is what we have been conditioned to do our whole life. We have been taught since grade school to:

THINK BIG! YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU PUT YOUR MIND TO!

While I agree with these statements in theory, they can also be very intimidating. If you fail to reach that goal you see for yourself, there can me loads of stress coming your way. The inadequate feelings will only push you farther and farther down the mountain and believe your success impossible. As with most situations in life, it is our expectations, our assumptions, rather than our real circumstances that lead to our biggest stresses.

Let’s say your goal is to run a marathon, but you have never run a mile in your life. You see that other people do it and it seems like it can be done. You walk and jog for a couple of days and run for a week or two. You decide to give it a try. 26.2 miles after never having run a mile. You wouldn’t make it 10 miles and your body would be crushed. The only time you would ever run again would be to catch you from tripping. We set those kind of goals for our health.

Lowered goals, lower expectations, are less intimidating and more achievable. It feels good to reach your goals and win. Progress makes people happy.

Step 2. Intense Focus on ONE Area of Your Health

If you are trying to start a strength training program, a new diet, sleeping better, meditation, cardio, and finding time to take part in your real life; you are going to fail and you will crumble terribly fast.

Along with the “THINK BIG” conditioning we have grown accustomed to, we have also been taught that we can do it all. It has been said many times that if you have more than one priority, you don’t have any. It wasn’t until the industrial revolution that the real word priority became plural. There was no such thing as priorities over a hundred years ago! We need to take that approach with our transformation.

Pick one area of your health.

ONE.

When I decided to make health my number one priority, my diet had to be my priority. It is the foundation of everything you do in life. If I had a good day of eating and I drank a lot of water, anything else I did to improve my health was extra credit. Make sure you dominate your one health priority for the particular season of health you are in. If you have that down, go to sleep, strength training, meditation, mobility, cardio or anything else that you may want to improve.

Choose what will make the biggest impact for you at this time and zero in on that one thing until it becomes a habit. Some say it takes 28 days, some say it takes 66 days, you know when it will become routine for you. Allow yourself the time and space it will take to make this one area a habit.

Step 3. Creating and Celebrating Your WIN Every Day

every mountain top is within reachAt the peak of IBM’s worldwide business domination, the technology and consulting corporation’s salespeople were known as being as incredibly effective. They smashed sales and killed quotas. How did they do this? Management kept their quotas extremely low. Why did they keep their quotas low? Because they didn’t want their people to be afraid to pick up the phone. They wanted to build sales momentum. People would very often overshoot their goals by a long shot.

Just as IBM did, so do sports teams. There might be an overarching theme or goal of winning a national championship, but if you think of that every day, you will not get there. You will be stunted by the huge scale of that goal. The only way to do that is to focus on this day and create wins for yourself in practice or that day’s game.

How can we transfer this principle to our health? Maybe you are intensely focusing on reshaping your diet, a win for that day would be that your lunch was real food that you ready. You don’t need to have every single meal prepped and planned, just that you made one meal full of whole foods. If you are on a fitness mission, your win could be that you made it to the gym. Not that you performed a PR max dead lift, just that you made it to the gym.

Creating and following through on small wins helps turn moments into momentum.

With your new found momentum, you will be able to achieve larger health goals in less time with less energy and effort.

Final Thoughts

Rigging the game so you can win is one the most important mental frameworks you can carry out when you are taking back your health. In a world that wants to sell you every new toy and health product that can “Get you fit quick!”, this mentality will allow you to stay focused and mindful.

Allowing yourself to continuously succeed through your small wins and reaching a lower goal makes you love the feeling and crave it more and more. You kick away performance anxiety and the overwhelming thoughts that you might not be good enough. You are more than good enough and you prove that to yourself every damn day!

That winning feeling is addicting and when you can trigger that with your health goals, success is not a matter of “if”, it’s a matter of “when”.

I think it’s fair to say Memorial Day serves two roles in American culture: the intended one and the unintended one.

The intended purpose of this day (which, as the Washington Post pointed out, is not the same as Veterans Day) is to honor those who died in service to their country.

What Does Memorial Day Mean to You?

Personally, Memorial Day reminds me of a place called Sag Harbor, a little town in Long Island where my family and I went every summer.

These days, I only get a chance to go back on the three-day summer holidays, but when I do I’m full of nostalgia. The smell of the cut grass, the quiet bay—it all brings me back to those summers where my parents let my brother and me go off on our own, giving me my first real taste of autonomy.
